Did you know how to stay safe online?
The global cost of cybercrime is predicted to reach $10 trillion per year by the end of 2025 and it will continue to grow. As the world relies more and more on technology, so do criminals and organized crime.
The
Online Security Book for Everyone
came about as I was frustrated at the quality and accuracy of the information
readily available, and guidance provided to us about staying secure whilst
online, when using our computers, our smartphones and our legal rights and
legal freedoms when it comes to our personal data. There are some good
resources available to us online, however, they are often scattered around or
hidden and unless you know about them, they are missed and overlooked. As
individuals there are two main threats to us in the online and digital world.
First the cyber-attack, where online criminals target us (the potential
victims) for financial gain, and second, the damage to our reputation and life
due to the way businesses gather, process, store and sell our personal
information (often unlawfully). This book aims to provide you with relevant,
accurate and up to date information on how to stay safe, continue to be
vigilant and be aware of the risks when online and when using computers,
smartphones, and tablets. Because this is a vast area and to ensure all
subjects are covered the book has been split into two volumes, both around 100
pages each. Part 1; talks about social engineering, what it is, the methods
used by cyber criminals and how we can protect ourselves against a social
engineering attack. It provides advice on how to protect against malware,
recover should you get infected and how to respond to ransomware demands. It
also explains what strong passwords are, how to create, manage, and store them.
It talks about the attacks against our passwords, how we can protect Page 3
against them, and what to expect from online services when we create accounts
and profiles. Part 2; talks about how to protect our devices from compromise,
what we need to consider, the methods used by cyber criminals to steal our
identity, financial information, and passwords and how we can protect ourselves
against these attacks. It provides advice on how to protect our personal
information, take control of our online profiles, and hold organizations,
public bodies, and business accountable when processing our personal
information. It also explains how to stay safe when browsing online, using
social media and other online services like email and file transfer. It talks
about the impact of AI, its fast evolution that has left security behind and
how to stay safe when out and about. For those of us that work from home there
is a section on how organizations should consider security and what we need to
think about when in the home office.
