Scotland 1987 850th Anniversary six Scottish cathedrals
It notes that only Glasgow and Kirkwall have largely survived in their original form.
St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, celebrating its 850th anniversary, is unique for surviving the Reformation virtually intact and has European architecture reflecting its Viking origins.
St Mungo's (Glasgow Cathedral) was saved by the people of the city during the Reformation upheavals and is the largest medieval building of its kind in Scotland.
St Giles in Edinburgh, not strictly a cathedral but the High Kirk, has witnessed many momentous events in Scottish history and is a national shrine.
St Machar's Cathedral in Aberdeen is the most northerly built entirely of granite, with a superb oak ceiling depicting coats of arms.
