Document Purpose
The ordinance commands the community of Chichilianne to provide a certain number of men for the provincial militia (Milice). It specifies that:
Recruitment: The men were to be selected by drawing lots (the tirage au sort) from among the "boys or newly married men" of the parish.
Age Requirements: Eligible men were those between the ages of 16 and 40.
Compliance: Officials (consuls and officers) were required to create an exact list of eligible men under threat of a 200 livre fine for failure to comply.
Publicity: The decree was to be read and posted at the end of a parish Mass to ensure the community was informed.
Key Figures
Louis-Jean Bertier de Sauvigny (1709–1788): A high-ranking administrator of the Ancien Régime. Before becoming the Intendant of Paris, he served as the Intendant of Grenoble (Dauphiné) in the early 1740s.
Monseigneur Delacroix: The signatory at the bottom who certified the ordinance.
This type of document was common during the reign of Louis XV, as the state frequently raised provincial militias to support the regular army during conflicts like the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748).
The background text, which is visible through the thin paper, appears to be an official printed ordinance or decree from the city of Grenoble, often found as recycled "waste paper" or used for official backing.
